Description
For small work, 10 mm is often too big. These number punches are 5 mm high, letting you add a serial number or product code to parts that offer little space. They're made of hardened steel and work on metal, plastic, wood and leather.
Use and application
One end of the punch holds the number, the other end is the striking face.
- Hold the punch upright against the material with one hand.
- Pick up the hammer with your other hand.
- Strike the striking face with moderate force, so the number is stamped in one go.
You can stamp the numbers 0 through 9 with them. There's no separate 9 in the set: you make it by turning the 6 upside down.
Material and hardness
These punches have a hardness of HRC 58-60, or 120 kg/mm². That value is above that of metal, and therefore also above that of softer materials. If the punch's hardness is below that of the workpiece, the punch will be damaged and the impression will stay shallow. So check beforehand which material you're going to work on.
What else you'll need
At this small size, holding the punch straight is more critical than at 10 mm. Finger guards help with this and keep your fingers out of the hammer's path. A striking hammer with a good handle also makes the job a lot more comfortable.
