Different types of forging tools

Different types of forging tools each have their own job in the workshop: holding, shaping, clamping or casting. The eight categories below form the core of a blacksmith's toolkit.

Anvils

Anvils in our range weigh between 10 and 125 kg. The weight determines how much force comes back into your hammer: a heavy block absorbs the blow, while one that's too light springs back under your strike.

Our anvils are made of forged steel and come from brands such as Ridgid and Kanca, alongside our own brand. If you're unsure about the weight, we'll gladly help you choose based on the work you want to do.

Forging hammers

Forging hammers determine how the steel moves with every blow. Weight, head shape and balance do more for your result than the name on the head.

Our forging hammers weigh between 500 grams and 2 kg and are available as cross peen, ball peen and rounding hammers. The heads are made of tool steel, the handles of ash or black locust wood.

Blacksmith tongs

Blacksmith tongs hold your workpiece still while you strike. The length of the handle determines how much distance you keep from the fire; our blacksmith tongs come in lengths between 500 and 700 mm.

The range of blacksmith tongs includes models from our own brand alongside tongs from Gedore. A set of two or three pairs of tongs covers most work in a starting workshop.

Bench vices

Bench vices for forging absorb hammer blows that would break an ordinary bench vice. A blacksmith's leg vice stands on a leg that channels the blow down to the floor, sparing the jaws.

We stock the BM 150, the BM 180 and the BM 200, including a heavy-duty bench vice for larger workpieces. Spindles, springs and levers are available separately.

Power hammers

Power hammers take over the heavy forging work you can't keep up by hand for long. The machine strikes at a constant frequency, leaving both hands free to guide the workpiece.

pneumatic power hammer from the AN series comes in four versions: the AN-25, AN-40, AN-55 and AN-75. For maintenance, we also stock dies, wedges and filter elements.

Forging presses

Forging presses shape hot steel with constant pressure instead of impact force. This gives you control with thick material and cuts down on noise in the workshop.

The hydraulic forging press from Nargesa is built for hot forging and takes over work that would require many hammer blows. Wear plates and oil filters for the press can be ordered separately.

Crucibles

Crucibles hold molten metal during melting and casting. The ceramic crucibles in our range work at temperatures up to 1,600 °C, more than enough for melting aluminium, bronze, copper and silver.

Every ceramic crucible comes with a matching crucible tongs, because you should never pick up a full crucible with ordinary tools. The smallest sizes are intended for precious metals, the largest for several kilos of bronze.

Casting moulds

Casting moulds determine what shape your metal takes as soon as it comes out of the crucible. Graphite moulds are used for repeatable work such as ingots and bars. With a moulding box and casting sand you can create a one-off mould to your own design.

The graphite casting moulds in our range vary in capacity from 1.8 to 500 ml. The smallest moulding box measures 100 x 200 x 100 mm, the largest 250 x 350 x 200 mm.

Choosing blacksmith tools for your workshop

You choose blacksmith tools based on the pieces you want to make, not on what looks most complete in a package. If you work in a small space, size and noise matter more than striking power. We'll also tell you if a lighter or cheaper model is enough for your work.

As you progress, you can expand with striking tools such as chisels and punches for cutting and punching through hot steel. Our range includes more than 1,100 specialist products, exclusively for forging and melting. That way you can expand step by step without switching suppliers.

Buying forging tools

At Parrot Shopping you can buy forging tools individually or as a complete package for your workshop. Our forging and melting packages are available for beginners, advanced smiths and professionals, with up to 20% package discount.

We test and select every product in our range ourselves before it goes into the shop. If you're torn between two models, we'll take a look with you before you order; that's what we mean by being your guide in the forging trade.

We ship throughout Europe and shipping is free from €50.
